Eshay Brantley's "Ode to my Umi"

I was honored to be one of several featured artists in this powerful exhibition, curated by artist and curator Eshay Brantley in partnership with the Emerging Curators Institute. "Ode to my Umi" has been exhibited twice and was a vibrant space for honoring and reflecting on Black maternal lineages.

My contributions to the exhibition included the Cloud Affirmation Mirrors. "Ancestors", a multimedia painting that blends my typography work with Affirmation Mirrors to explore the idea that we are both reflections of and affirmed by our ancestors. I also shared "The Am in Mama", a poem and accompanying illustration created to honor Black mothers that echo the sentiment at the heart of the exhibition. Lastly, I exhibited my Grandma Obedia’s bowling jacket—hand-sewn by her and covered in tournament patches collected over three decades of bowling across the United States and Canada, beginning in the 1960s. Each of these works contributes to the exhibition’s celebration of legacy, memory, and the enduring presence of Black maternal care.
